Abstract
In recent years, the transcription factor Hif-1α has emerged as the central factor controlling the cellular response to reduced oxygen. The purpose of this Perspective is to briefly summarize our current knowledge about hypoxia and Hif-1α in the cells that compose the skeleton. Advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms that mediate the complex and multifaceted action of this transcription factor both in chondrocytes, osteoblasts and osteoclasts open the way to novel therapies to improve bone accretion and repair.
