Acne vulgaris is a common presenting complaint to the family physician. With its multitude of treatment options and varying degrees of presentation severity, the management of acne vulgaris in the primary health care setting can be overwhelming. This review provides a framework for primary care physicians for the management of acne vulgaris. It presents information regarding the basic mechanism of action, pharmacokinetic profile, safety, efficacy, patient preference and role in therapy for the major modalities of acne treatment relevant to primary care.
