Busy family physicians spend much of their time performing workups for patients who present with common signs and symptoms. Time is always at a premium. So, what is a busy clinician to do?

Common Medical Diagnoses: An Algorithmic Approach offers one powerful technique to help family physicians find the right path through diagnostic dilemmas. To develop this text, the authors classified common clinical problems as signs, symptoms, and laboratory abnormalities. For over 100 common diagnostic dilemmas, the authors extensively reviewed the recent literature and developed algorithms that follow a logical progression from recording signs and symptoms, to ordering the right tests, to interpreting laboratory values.

Each algorithm offers a stepwise journey down a diagnostic tree. Although the authors acknowledge that no algorithm fully accounts for the circumstances of the individual patient, these decision trees suggest a logical, cost-effective approach to diagnosis.
