LAST SUMMER, for the first time, I believed that my grandfather was going to die. After having been in declining health for several years, he became seriously ill with complications of Hodgkin's disease and was not expected to survive much longer. My childhood memories are of a gentleman with a quiet reserve and a knowing smile; as I grew older, he began telling stories. Grandpa Harry was a great storyteller. I realized that there were stories that I did not want lost, stories that I had never heard, perhaps stories that had never been told. So I got on an airplane.
