THE PHYSICIAN-patient relationship and therapeutic process can be conceptualized as a carefully designed and skillfully executed waltz led gracefully by the physician. This article examines techniques that the physician may use to increase the likelihood of a successful waltz that will lead to a maximally efficacious therapeutic outcome. Obstacles to a successful waltz will be examined and potential solutions offered.
The individual steps of the waltz can, at times, be complex, necessitating a compassionate and skilled teacher. The patient, as an eager partner, should be moved gently through the therapeutic process. The steps, style, and pace of the dance are different for each patient encounter, and the physician must be prepared on occasion to share the lead. Knowledge, creativity, endurance, and love of the dance are the necessary characteristics of the physician for successful therapy to take place.
