The G protein cycle. RGS proteins are GTPase-accelerating proteins (GAPs), accelerating the hydrolysis of GTP bound to Gα. RGS proteins thus reduce the lifetime of active Gα–GTP and βγ dimers, so that signaling pathways downstream of the G protein are held in check.
