Abstract

Member of teachers' unions perceive themselves to be in a conflicted relationship with members of the community both during and after a strike. Using the Burkean concept of identity-identification, this paper isolates the genesis of the conflict. Strategies to resolve conflict, based on the change-agent theory from management, are offered, which allow the union to reverse resentment into advocacy of its cause by nonunion community members.
