A Broader Perspective

In the Pacific Northwest, a debate has been raging for several years regarding the ecology of old growth forests. On one side of the debate, logging companies and communities dependent on the timber industry argue that the old growth forests in the region are a renewable resource on which much of the region's economy depends. Environmentalists and conservationists argue that the ecosystem of the old growth forest is threatened by the extent of logging. The debate is now centered on a small bird, the northern spotted owl.
